Programme: Sustainable Environment Management

The principal objective of sustainable environmental resource management program is to ensure food and livelihood security of the Sunderbans dependent resource poor eco-sensitive community of the southwest coastal region. Sustainable resource management program involves multi-dimensional activities. The initiative involves strong advocacy component with specific focus on sustainable agriculture, conservation of biodiversity and introduction of sustainable agriculture in diverse agro-eco zone especially in saline area are essential components of Shushilan’s resource management.

  • Water Resource   ( 4 Articles )
    Shushilan’s aim is to ensure effective utilization of the potential water resources of this region to ensure livelihood security of the coastal people. The south west coastal region particularly Shyamnagar and Ashashuni upazilas of Satkhira district are ecologically highly saline. Safe drinking water scarcity is very acute. The objective of the programme is to provide safe drinking water for the community peoples of those areas.

    One of the major priority issues of Shushilan is Environment. And, land use is the primary factor in protection of environment. Shushilan has undertaken following activities in promoting fertility and productivity of soil as well as to conserve bio-diversity.

    Forest and environment are interrelated with one another. It is needless to say that forest plays a significant role in conservation of forest and protection of environmental hazard. The world largest mangrove forest, Sundarbans is located in this region. But, once the people of this border area settled by cutting the deep forest trees which is not found today. Following activities undertook by Shushilan to revive the forest as it was before.

    As the southwest coastal region is located adjacent to the world largest wetland/mangrove forest area, world environment is closely linked with the environment of this area. Besides, the area is abundant with resources in saline water. In spite, the people of this terminal/border area have to live with acute poverty line. The following activities have been taken for secured livelihood of these people through effective utilization of the wetland resources.
  • Disaster Management   ( 2 Articles )
    The southwest coastal region of Bangladesh where Shushilan works is disaster prone area. The people of this coastal area were saved in the last Tsunami due to low tide in the hitting time. Cyclone of 1988 and flood of 2000 remind us about the serious disaster. Cyclone hits this area every year in November-December, but the Sundarbans work as barrage to protect the people. These disasters damages assets, standing crops, shelters, forest animals and lives. Besides, seasonal draught, hailstorm, and tornado are frequent. Scientists assumed that this region will be submerged within next 50 years due to global warming and sea level rise.
