Empowerment of Resource Poor Community Especially Poor Women:The existing socio-political institutions including political parties belong to the influential and rich section of the society and are dominated by the propertied class. The poor have no access to these institutions and hence they are deprived of the facilities provided by the state and the society. The resource poor community particularly the women needs an alternative institution of their own as a bargaining platform and as an instrument of socio economic empowerment.

Coastal and saline geo-structure WaterAid partnered with Shushilan in November 2005. Shushilan designed a project called "Promoting Environmental Health through Sustainable Provision for Safe Water and Sanitation" to ensure safe water and sanitation for vulnerable communities in Shyamnagor and Asasuni Upazila through a community-led, demand-driven approach. Shushilan will cover a total of 23 unions and municipalities in two upazila in south-western Bangladesh (642,151 population). It is the first opportunity for WaterAid to work in the context of coastal and saline geo-structures to address the unique challenges through piloting and promoting different approaches and technological options. |

25 destitute women have been provided with 45 days training on IGA and a group was formed. They deposit taka 1.00 per week from their allowance to build up capital which will be used for self employment. A staff has been employed by Shushilan to always assist and monitor their progress |

Shushilan undertaken roadside plantation and offered responsibilities to destitute women (abandoned, widow, divorced etc). Two women have been given duty to maintain one kilometers of road and they were provided with monthly allowance and skill development trainings so that they can survive with children. At present 34 women are engaged in routine maintenance activities. |

Increasing of shrimp culture in the region resulted into reducing of cultivable cropland which further results into reducing of works for landless farmers. Conditions of agriculture dependent families have been worsened due to loosing of jobs of male members. Besides, many people migrated to India leaving their wife and children alone that increased number of women headed families. These families lead very miserable life as the women have to stay at relative’s house with children. These children are totally depended upon their mother. The mothers have to struggle hard to make their livelihood through collecting shrimp fries or through working at others’ houses. Following programmes have been undertaken for improvement of these women |

Ward Level Youth Organization will be formed in order to foster the development activities of the Ward Committees by involving the youths. The youths will be made capable to take the responsibilities of the Ward Committees in future. Formation of youth organization was not possible in the last year due to business with the Ward Committees. It is expected that these activity will be started from 2005. |
