Forest and environment are interrelated with one another. It is needless to say that forest plays a significant role in conservation of forest and protection of environmental hazard. The world largest mangrove forest, Sundarbans is located in this region. But, once the people of this border area settled by cutting the deep forest trees which is not found today. Following activities undertook by Shushilan to revive the forest as it was before.

Thousands metric tons of honey is being naturally produced in the Sundarbans every year. But, bees are in a position of jeopardize due to natural disruptions/disasters and faulty honey collection techniques. Indigenous variety ‘Serena’ is in extinction due to absence of harbor (holes on big trees) as the trees are not densely as before. As a result, agricultural production is gradually reducing due to absence of pollination by the bees. Shushilan has taken bee keeping and honey production project in order to make environmental balance, produce pure honey and to generate income-employment for the poor. |

Staff at Shushilan refer to the Sundarbans area as “the lifeblood of Bangladesh”, because of its important function as a buffer between Bangladesh and the Indian Ocean, as well as its rich biodiversity. The shrinking of the protective Sundarban forest, coupled with a rise in poverty due to income loss from failed crops, has pushed this area into a vicious circle of poverty and ecological destruction.
In the past, man-made embankments were temporary features protecting against floods. More recently, however, permanent constructions (part of the increasing shrimp trade) are severely affecting the siltation levels of the rivers. As the volume of silt deposited on the river bed rises, so do water levels, leading to more frequent floods and water logging. |

Shushilan started this activity in 1994 with the roadside tree plantation by the saplings produced in its own nursery. In 1997, it planted 15 Kms. roadside with the support of World Food Program, 19 Kms. roadside in 2001, 15 Kms. from 2002 to 2005 with the support of Concern Bangladesh. Up to 2005 Shushilan has planted around 60,000 saplings in 60 Kms. roadside. Presently it has been implementing plantation program through Club/CBOs and Ward Committees. In 2005 Shushilan with the support of Concern Bangladesh planted 24,215 saplings in 17 Kms. roadside of which around 97% saplings are alive.
