Due to extreme salinity caused by unplanned shrimp cultivation, there is acute shortage of safe drinking water in the coastal area. A woman or a child has to collect sweet drinking water covering a distance of 3-4 miles. Shushilan has taken following initiatives for supply of safe drinking water to the people of the southwest coastal region:
- Rain Water Harvesting (RWH): Shushilan has installed a total of 45 reservoirs for harvesting rain water. During rain, people collect rain water from tin sheds of their houses and preserve it in reservoirs to drink round the year. Shushilan has supplied the reservoirs having capacity of 3,200 and 2,000 liters. Some people are harvesting rain water in different indigenous method by using pots, pitches and bamboo pipes. Around 100 families harvested rainwater through bamboo pipes in 2004 and 100 families in 2004.
- Pond Sand Filter (PSF): In the PSF technology, pond water in lifted up into a reservoirs adjacent to the pond. A tube well attached with the PSF is pumped to lift up water and the water is filtered finally through sands to the jars. Till reporting Shushilan has constructed 9 PSFs at community level and around 200 households uses each PSF.
