Wetland Resource
As the southwest coastal region is located adjacent to the world largest wetland/mangrove forest area, world environment is closely linked with the environment of this area. Besides, the area is abundant with resources in saline water. In spite, the people of this terminal/border area have to live with acute poverty line. The following activities have been taken for secured livelihood of these people through effective utilization of the wetland resources.

Environment Friendly Shrimp Culture

Some on-farm researches have been conducted in the eco-demo farm to introduce mixed shrimp cum finfish culture and to stop mono shrimp culture. The ultimate goal of this project is to conserve bio-diversity as well as the environment. A study on responses of shrimp at different water depth was conducted in 2004.

Paddy Cultivation in Saline Area

In the area where eco-demo farm has been established, paddy cultivation has been quite difficult due to high salinity. But, prior to shrimp cultivation, paddy cultivation was widely practiced in this area. Fish, cow and other bio-diversity were seen centering paddy. But, a severe damage has been observed in last few years to the cattle and other bio-diversity due to non-production of paddy in this area.

Vegetable Cultivation in Saline Area

Some area of the eco-demo farm has been made elevated from the normal ground level and initiative has been taken for vegetables cultivation on this land. This is the first initiative of vegetables cultivation in this saline beel (depressed land) area. Pumpkin (Lau), Kolmi, Puishak and other vegetables have been cultivated here. Signs of failure have been found for many tests but experience on this will lead to bring success in future.

Crab Culture

Crabs which are caught from the Sundarbans generally do not reach up to the grades. As a result, the fishermen get very low price. If these crabs are fattened for a few days with supplementary feed and care in a controlled culture system to reach up to a grade, the farmers can get more profit from this. Different researches have been conducted on crab fattening technologies

Indigenous Finfish Culture
Experiments on ways of protecting endangered indigenous finfish species through culture in the ghers, nature and quality of feed and ways of maximizing profit from culturing local finfish species have been conducted in the eco-demo farm.
