Program 3: Climate Change, Disaster, Humanitarian Response and Environmental Resource Management
This program responds to the defining reality of Shushilan's working area: a low-lying, salinity-affected coastal zone on the front line of climate change, where livelihoods depend on fragile soil, water, forest and wetland systems. It works to protect and restore these natural resources while helping communities reduce their vulnerability to the disasters that repeatedly strike the region.
Soil resource management addresses the creeping salinization of farmland through improved land and water practices, saline-tolerant cropping and measures that keep degraded soils productive. Water resource management is especially critical in a delta where safe drinking water is scarce; the work spans re-excavation of canals, reconstruction and repair of ponds and pond sand filters (PSFs), rainwater harvesting, and drinking-water supply through technologies suited to saline conditions. Forest and wetland resource management extend the programme into the Sundarbans landscape, promoting conservation, social forestry, and protection of the animal and wetland resources on which many households depend.
The programme's second pillar is disaster management and reducing the impacts of climate change vulnerabilities. Shushilan works across the full cycle — preparedness, emergency response and post-disaster recovery — a capability that has made it a significant humanitarian actor, including in the Rohingya (FDMN) response in Cox's Bazar. On climate change itself, it pursues both adaptation and mitigation, notably through large-scale tree plantation that has earned national recognition. Over the years it has re-excavated more than 300 canals, rehabilitated more than 500 ponds and 500 PSFs, installed more than 20,000 tube-wells, built more than 30,000 houses, and worked across 31 FDMN camps. Coordinated through the Risk Reduction & Humanitarian Response Unit and the Environmental & Social Safeguard Cell, it embodies Shushilan's identity as an organization for sustainable, eco-sensitive and vulnerable communities.
