Program 1: Socio-Economic Development Program
This is Shushilan's founding program and remains the backbone of its work with the coastal and rural poor of southwest Bangladesh. Rooted in the organization's vision of a congenial society where everyone enjoys dignity and respect, it rests on the conviction that lasting change begins when poor households gain reliable access to capital, skills and markets. At its center is a large group savings and micro-credit operation, implemented in line with Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA) standards, which mobilizes members into savings groups and channels affordable credit to those the formal banking system overlooks. Around this financial core, the program layers a wider set of livelihood interventions designed to move families from survival to self-reliance.
A major thrust is small-scale rural enterprise development linked directly to market access, so that the goods and produce of member households reach fair and profitable outlets rather than being lost to intermediaries. Agro-based business promotion complements this by strengthening the value chains most relevant to the saline delta — climate-adapted agriculture, homestead and vertical gardening, aquaculture and small agribusiness. Alongside income generation, the program treats food security and livelihood resilience as inseparable goals, helping households diversify income and stabilize consumption through recurring lean seasons and disaster shocks.
The program pays particular attention to those furthest behind. Its economic development track for hardcore and ultra-poor women combines asset transfer, skills training and mentoring in a graduation approach that enables the poorest women to build viable enterprises and step out of extreme poverty. Income-generating activity (IGA) support, resettlement assistance for the displaced, and women's economic empowerment run through every component. Delivered through the Savings & Credit Program Unit and reinforced by the Business Development, Research & Advocacy Cell, the programme has laid the economic foundation on which Shushilan's health, education, governance and environmental work can take hold.
