Program 2: Education & ICT and Health & Nutrition

Education & ICT and Health & Nutrition program advances Shushilan's belief that economic progress is incomplete without healthy, educated and skilled communities. Bringing together human-development sectors that reinforce one another, it works with children, mothers and young people across the coastal districts to build the capabilities that allow families to sustain gains made elsewhere in the organization's work.

The education component focuses on expanding access and keeping vulnerable children in school. School feeding has been a flagship intervention: Shushilan has delivered nutrition fortified biscuit (to 594952 children), mid-day meals (to 9837 children) in poverty-prone areas from 2011 to 2022 reaching children directly and its education work has touched school-going children over time. Complementing formal schooling, life-skills-based education (LSBE) and graduation ceremonies mark young people's progress, while sport initiatives such as cricket for girls open space for confidence and inclusion. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) runs alongside education as a tool for opportunity, equipping youth and communities with digital skills relevant to livelihoods and civic participation.

Health activities extend basic services and health awareness to underserved coastal populations, with a strong emphasis on preventive care and community-level engagement. Nutrition — particularly maternal and child nutrition — is a dedicated priority, linked with the food-security work elsewhere in the organization so that dietary improvement is backed by real access to food. Safe water and sanitation form an essential part of this programme in a region where waterborne disease and salinity threaten health directly, through drinking-water supply from PSFs and tube-wells, rainwater harvesting, hygiene promotion and handwashing-device distribution — support that proved especially vital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Delivered in partnership with agencies such as the World Food Program and government education authorities, the program strengthens the human foundation on which resilient, self-reliant communities are built.
